How to create the perfect makeup area
One of our favourite things about visiting a salon, beautician or makeup artist is their set-up. It’s not just the products used, but the whole experience – from the beautiful design to the tools and, of course, the gorgeous mirror – because how else can you see your transformation?
Want to recreate the beauty salon experience at home? It’s simpler than you think. Read on for our guide.
Step one: dressing table
One of the most important aspects of a proper make-up area is the surface you’re going to use. A full dressing table looks amazing but isn’t always needed or necessary – particularly if your space is small. It’s all about the right accessories and the right styling. Have you got any existing surfaces you could use? Anything from a large (and strong) shelf to a chest of drawers can do the job. We’ve even seen old work desks converted into the most beautiful spaces – get creative and work with what you’ve got. We love customer Chethan’s stylish setup – pictured to the left!
Step two: Hollywood mirror
As if we were going to miss this one out! If you’re after the ultimate makeup area, proper lighting and a mirror are a must – enter THE professional beauty essential. Available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colours and designs, Hollywood mirrors are our absolute favourite when it comes to makeup. There’s a choice of natural lighting or cooler LED bulbs (often the favourite for many makeup connoisseurs) meaning they’re perfect for getting an even coverage when it comes to foundation, and brilliant at helping with proper blending of eyeshadows. Plus, if you’re keen to show off your makeup skills to friends, they look pretty fancy too…
Step three: make-up
The fun part! Start off with a thorough organisation of your makeup – what’s out of date? What don’t you use? What will you never use? Get rid of all the far-gone goods, and pop everything you want to keep into different groups; what you use every day, what you only use for going out, and what you might need for fancy dress or a special occasion.
First up, it will help you know what you’ve got and where you’ve got it. Second (and most exciting) it shows what you’re missing and what you need to buy in a proper beauty haul. We’re aiming for a collection as extensive as beauty blogger Just Jordan (pictured). One can dream…
Step four: storage
You’ve got the work area, you’ve got the light, you’ve got the makeup (naturally). Now it’s time to get it organised. The type of storage you need will depend on the amount of goodies you have, so it’s here where you get to be creative. If you’re a serial purchaser and have a lot of ‘essentials’, a chest of drawers underneath your surface space is often the best way forward. It’s perfect for necessities like rollers, straighteners and curlers if you’re big on hair. Meanwhile, if you’re select with your purchases and only have a couple of goods to keep on your desk, bowls and pots can be an aesthetically pleasing way to show off your collection – take a look at this stylish ensemble from customer Stefanie (right).
